The natural world is becoming unruly in its weather patterns. Many of the animals and plant species are disappearing. Man seems to be the only one able to survive, ignoring the effects of odd tsunami and earthquakes. Yet somehow all this devastation in the natural kingdom feels to me like it is our fault.
What is it about the way we are behaving that is causing the natural balance to be upset.
What is obvious is that first world countries are the true masters "keeping up with the Jones". Our neighbours get a new flatscreen TV. Even though ours is still working we now have to get a new flatscreen TV. A filmstar wears a low cut nude and silver dress to the Oscars, thousands of women now want a similar nude and silver dress to hang up in their wardrobe. A successful guy drives a particular brand of sports car, now thousands of guys want that sports car and are willing to trade up their old car for that model, just to prove they are as successful.
Now that "keeping up with the Jones' " philosophy is contagious. India and China with their billions of 'wannabees' also expect to join in and buy that flat screen, just like their Western neighbours. And who would deny them says our governments and business interests... But truthfully speaking isn't this all just a glorified version of "coveting" en masse? When did "keeping up with the Jone's" cease to be anything other than coveting?
Environment is a contentment issue. We are no longer content. We look to material things to bring us happiness. We think by having the latest, sexiest, better designed will make everything all right. And maybe it does for a day until that hollow feeling returns again.
We live in airconditioned environments, water pumped into our homes, food from supermarkets with milk that comes out of cartons. Fourty percent of kids now believe that milk comes out of cartons and not cows. That is disconnected from our natural environement.
How can we expect to "tend" or "keep" a natural world when we live apart from it?
I keep harking back to the beginning. Trying to wonder if there wasn't something back there that might just leave a clue for us now.
In the begining....at the time of the Garden of Eden...it was a time of Gods kingdom on Earth.Man had a relationship with God. He even came down in the evening to talk to Adam and Eve who hung around, no clothes and wanted for nothing. God put Adam in the garden of Eden to "tend and keep it".
Oh but I forgot that is what got us kicked out of the garden of Eden...when we wanted to be like God and know good and evil.
Coveting.
Damn that serpent.
